Levels

The level system is unique to St. Clair High School Bands. This is a system designed to challenge each student to attain musical growth at his/her own pace. Each student is expected to complete two levels per semester for a total of four per year and 16 levels by graduation from band at St. Clair High School.

The Level System is one method of measuring student growth in band.

The levels increase in difficulty as the number progress, but each student should find completion of a level well within their ability when time is dedicated to practicing at home. Mr. Volz is always available should difficulty arise when completing a level

Performances can occur at any time during the semester. It is recommended that the student finish the level as early as possible in the semester to avoid a rush at the end of the semester when we are all the busiest.

Performance Criteria

The grade for each level is a total score from the two sections of the level. The performance is scored out of 25 points and the evaluation is scored out of 25 points.

The performance grade will be scored first. Students may accept the scored grade or perform the level again before continuing on to the evaluation. The criteria for the performance is aligned with the MSBOA solo performance evaluation.

Students are encouraged to complete as many levels as possible during their career at St. Clair High School. Extra credit will be given for completion of additional levels each semester.

Example:

Freshman Year

Semester I

Level 1- 50 points

Level 2- 50 points

Level 3- 50 points extra credit

Semester II

Level 4- 50 points

Level 5- 50 points

Level 6- 50 points extra credit

Level 7- 50 points extra credit

Levels will count as semester exams for band. The combined score from the two required levels will be input as 20% of the semester grade.

Please Read Carefully

Students who do not complete two levels in a semester will receive a ZERO on their exam which will very negatively affect their final grade and grade point average.
